L for Lame

I don't know what the hype of Death Note is all about that I must follow my curiosity and watch the film at last, resulting in a big disappointment that I wish I could put my name onto the book myself and die. at least certain people that talk about this film at all times will be aware of their own lives, as watching this film may cause sudden death.

basically, this film follows the discovery of a book called "Death Note" by a high school student named Light Yagami. soon, he finds out that he can kill any people by writing their names onto the book. not only that, he can also create the scenarios for each deaths. immediately the number of sudden death cases in Japan increases and this attracts the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective called L (you'll be surprised when you see the appearance of this L. like I said, L is for 'Lame'). as usual, for the rest of the story, just google or wikipedia it, or even watch it yourself.

actually the theme of this film (or should I say manga for the source of the adaptation) is brilliant. I like it at the first place when I read the story; a boy making a pact with the devil, a book that can kill people, the competition between the two opposite sides, and don't forget the betrayal (warning for this!). however, the execution itself ruins the whole thing. the unstructured plot, the annoying jump-cuts, the comical hyperbolic characters, the not-so-cinematic views (yeah, the cinematography sucks!), and the appearance of the death god Ryuk complete the destruction. without the appearance of the death god this film might be better. that creature reduces the level of maturity of this film, and it sends me back into the era when Ultraman, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Black Masker Rider were my everyday must-sees.

some unreasonable aspects in this film also made me difficult to digest the whole concept. is it usual in Japan that we can find a mini-TV as a bonus inside a potato chips packaging?
(of course I know that little prick put the TV himself. I'm saying this in a sarcastic way, you morons!) or even how come Light's father doesn't allow his own son to investigate the case, where he as one of the respectable police instructor put his trust to a weirdo, desserts-freak, so-called detective L(ame)?

even so, this film still has some unforgettable morals in it. we can see how worthless our lives can be; put a name into the book, that people dies suddenly, big shit! you don't have to be careful in your lives as you can die that easy (I think Indonesia needs the book more than Japan, and not only one, but hundreds exemplars!). or even another thing, you gotta find out what your lover's activities in every single details, so that he/she will not get any chance to have an affair and finally create a very neat plan to kill you.

final words, this film has the second part entitled Death Note the Last Name that I haven't watched (luckily it wasn't named Death Note: Nama Ditulis, Mati Lagi Satu, Polisi Nyari Pelakunya, Gak Ketemu! Tolol Deh Itu Polisi!). and if you freaks can't get enough of this film, there are the original manga you can read and a 37-episodes anime to watch. but frankly said, watching this film saves your lives more than watching any of Indonesian cults (Hidayah: Mayat Membusuk Di Kali, Anak Durhaka Mati Merana, etc).

Cast: Tatsuya Fujiwara, Ken'ichi Matsuyama, Shido Nakamura.
Director: Shusuke Kaneko
Country: Japan
Runtime: 126 min.

argh.. u don't get it..
Light himself put the mini-TV in case he was suspected.. he put it in the "original chips" or sth.. because.. he's the only one who eats that in the family..

but yes.. L is a desert freak.. and a weirdo.. that's what makes him cool haha

yes.. the movie is lame.. but the anime is much2 better.. although i don't think you like this type of movie anyway..

its a comic book adaptation, and its Japanese made, most of em are low budget unlike Hollywood's. Most of their budget are spent on the CGI i guess which IMO isnt that bad.
Again its a comic book adaptation, and you are expecting a maturity ? its like watching spidey and asking how come theres a web coming out of his wrist, and saying supes wearing his underwear outside is stupid and not mature. Dont expect good cinematography, good acting and etc....
For me, i enjoyed the movies, seen alot of japanese comic to movie adaptation and most of em suck bawls, this is by far the best comic book to movie adpatation, and i guess theres where the hype come from.

while writing this entry, I positioned myself as a person who hasn't seen the comic or the anime. so this is purely a film critics, in which i talk about all of the fim elements in it. also for the maturity thingy, of course spiderman and death note cannot be compared. spiderman is a pure superhero fantasy kind of film, where death note comes in a lot darker style. however, the appearance of the death god just put the film into the same level as spidey and even superman.

why does death note movies suck?

1st. the act. the actors just too stupid to act.. at list they son't fit with their characters. (Light should be more evil with eyes of power and justice, L should have more leadership, etc)

2nd. they cut the timeline. it just makes it worse.

3rd. it's anime-wannabe

4th. the sequel isn't even better

so I tell you guys:

Watch the anime! then read the manga!

but never watch the movies

Wah menghina bener lo nyet =P
Tapi emang sih Tatsuya Fujiawa bener-bener nggak mirip ama Light yang di manga. Need to be more arrogant-sounding and more evil-looking!

yang cocok cuma ryuk hahahaha..

tapi yagami souchiro sama matsuda nya cocok.

The whole premise for Death Note sucks because the author doesn't have a clue what a genius really is.

Being extremely good tennis players for example is an obvious example. It's definitely not a common trait of geniuses but for some reason the two "geniuses" are world class tennis players. That's a shallow example though, and what really shows how far these "geniuses" are from true geniuses deeper than that is the geniuses' lack of imagination and applied intelligence.

I'm not a genius; I only consider myself above average in intelligence myself. I would have definitely been able to make better use of the Death Note than any of these so-called "geniuses" did though.

I figured out the key and most powerful point of the Death Note after reading the rules, something that should be pretty obvious but completely missed by these "geniuses." It's not the power to kill people that makes the Death Note useful, but its ability to control people. I couldn't believe all the unnecessary problems he brought upon himself. The best plans should be simple, and he could have easily ruled the world by controlling world leaders and politicians to create laws that would recreate the world as he saw fit... to make it match his own vision of what the world should be.

The world is inhabited by billions of sheep controlled by a few thousand powerful people. It's not killing people that will change it, but using power to control powerful to shape the world that will. Light, after several years was still head of a police department, still killing off petty criminals. What a joke. The story is a product of unintelligent authors with no authority or about what they were writing about (i.e. world politics, society, justice, morality). Its popularity is only due to the fact that it caters to the vengeful nature of proles.
